The history of the model dates back to 1944, when the Willys-Overland company created a military off-road vehicle. A year later, its civilian version, the CJ-2A, was created. The first civilian Willys rolled off the production line at the Willys-Overland factory in Toledo (Ohio) on July 17, 1945. A few days later, a media presentation was held, led by Vice President of the Board, Charles Sorensen. The event took place at his new, 2,000-acre ranch in Hudson, Michigan. Sorensen emphasized the Jeep's versatility - its usefulness in farm work, forestry, guarding and as a tow truck.
